Running a nonprofit means balancing mission with risk. Your organization faces the same liability exposures as any business — plus unique risks related to board governance, volunteers, grant compliance, and the populations you serve. A D&O claim against your board can cost $50,000–$200,000 in legal defense alone. An employment practices allegation can drain operating funds for years. And a single incident involving a vulnerable population can threaten your organization’s existence.

Collin County Insurance Group specializes in nonprofit insurance through carriers who understand mission-driven organizations. We build comprehensive programs that protect your organization, your board, and your people — at rates that respect your budget.

Who Needs Nonprofit Insurance

Any organization operating under a charitable, educational, social service, or community purpose needs proper coverage. We insure nonprofits across every sector:

  • 501(c)(3) charitable organizations — foundations, community development, and advocacy groups
  • Social service agencies — housing, food banks, family services, and crisis intervention
  • Youth-serving organizations — mentoring programs, after-school care, youth athletics, and camps
  • Healthcare nonprofits — community health centers, mental health services, home health, and hospice
  • Education nonprofits — charter schools, tutoring programs, workforce development, and literacy organizations
  • Arts and culture organizations — museums, theaters, galleries, and cultural centers
  • Animal welfare organizations — shelters, rescue groups, and wildlife conservation
  • Environmental organizations — conservation groups, land trusts, and sustainability programs
  • Community associations — chambers of commerce, neighborhood groups, and civic organizations
  • Recovery and addiction services — sober living, treatment support, and 12-step organizations

What We Cover

Directors & Officers (D&O) is the most critical coverage for any nonprofit. Your board members volunteer their time and expertise — they shouldn’t risk their personal assets to serve your mission. D&O covers legal defense and damages when board members are sued for decisions made on behalf of the organization. This includes allegations of mismanagement, breach of fiduciary duty, failure to comply with regulations, and wrongful termination. We make sure your policy covers past, present, and future board members.

Employment Practices Liability (EPLI) covers claims from employees alleging discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, or retaliation. Nonprofits are not immune to employment claims — and the legal costs to defend even unfounded allegations can exceed $100,000.

General Liability covers bodily injury and property damage claims from people who visit your facility, attend your events, or participate in your programs. If a client trips at your office, a volunteer is injured at a fundraiser, or a participant is hurt during a program, GL responds.

Abuse & Molestation Coverage is essential for any nonprofit working with children, elderly, disabled individuals, or other vulnerable populations. Standard GL policies exclude these claims. This coverage provides defense and indemnity for allegations of sexual misconduct, physical abuse, or emotional abuse — claims that can be catastrophic without proper insurance.

Commercial Property covers your building, office contents, equipment, furniture, computers, and specialized items. For nonprofits that receive donated goods, we can also cover inventory in your care, custody, and control.

Workers Compensation covers your paid employees for on-the-job injuries. Even if most of your workforce is volunteer, your paid staff needs coverage. Texas doesn’t mandate workers comp for most private employers, but operating without it means employees can sue you directly with no cap on damages.

Volunteer Accident Coverage provides medical expense coverage for volunteers injured while serving your organization. This isn’t workers comp — it’s an accident medical policy that covers volunteers who aren’t your employees. It’s an important recruitment and retention tool.

Event Liability covers your organization when hosting fundraisers, galas, community events, golf tournaments, runs/walks, or special programs. Whether your event includes alcohol service, athletic activities, or large crowds, event-specific coverage protects against injuries and property damage.

Cyber Liability covers data breach response costs when donor information, client records, or employee data is compromised. Nonprofits store sensitive data and are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals who know budgets for IT security are limited.

Crime and Fidelity Bond protects against employee theft, embezzlement, and forgery — risks that are heightened in organizations where financial controls may be less formal than in for-profit businesses. Many grant-making organizations require proof of a fidelity bond.

How Nonprofit Insurance Pricing Works

Your premium depends on several factors: annual budget/revenue, number of employees and volunteers, the populations you serve, your program activities, claims history, and the specific coverages you need. A $500,000-budget mentoring organization will pay very differently than a $5M social service agency with 50 employees.

We work with carriers who package nonprofit coverages together — bundling D&O, GL, property, and EPLI into a single program often costs less than buying each coverage separately. And because we access specialty nonprofit markets, our rates reflect the actual risk profile of mission-driven organizations rather than standard commercial pricing.

Our Nonprofit Carrier Partners

Through USLI, Philadelphia Insurance, Combined Group, and our direct carrier appointments, we access specialty markets built specifically for nonprofits:

  • Package programs designed for 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Broad D&O forms covering past, present, and future board members
  • Abuse and molestation coverage with meaningful limits
  • Carriers experienced with nonprofit claims
  • Programs for new organizations with no operating history

Why Choose Collin County Insurance Group

Nonprofit insurance requires understanding both the coverage and the mission. Many agents try to fit nonprofits into standard commercial policies, leaving dangerous gaps in D&O, employment practices, abuse coverage, and volunteer protection. We use carriers who build packages specifically for nonprofits — comprehensive coverage at rates that work within your budget.

We also understand the practical realities: board members who serve without pay deserve protection. Volunteers who give their time deserve accident coverage. And your organization deserves an agent who will advocate for you when a claim happens — not just sell you a policy and disappear.
