Texas requires every driver to carry auto insurance, but the state minimums of 30/60/25 are dangerously low. That means $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and just $25,000 for property damage. A single trip to the ER after a serious collision can exceed $30,000 — and if you’re at fault and underinsured, the difference comes out of your pocket.

Collin County Insurance Group shops your auto coverage across multiple carriers to find the right balance of protection and price. We serve individuals and families throughout Collin County, from new drivers in McKinney to families with teen drivers in Frisco and Prosper.

What We Cover

Liability Coverage pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others in an at-fault accident. We recommend at least 100/300/100 for most families — far above the state minimum. Lawsuits from serious accidents routinely reach six figures, and your liability limit is all that stands between the claim and your personal savings.

Collision covers damage to your own vehicle in an accident, regardless of fault. If you’re still making payments on your car, your lender requires collision coverage. Even if your car is paid off, a $500 or $1,000 deductible makes collision coverage well worth the premium on newer vehicles.

Comprehensive covers everything that isn’t a collision — hail, theft, vandalism, animal strikes, falling objects, and fire. In North Texas, comprehensive coverage pays for itself almost every spring. The DFW area is one of the most hail-prone regions in the country, and a single storm can cause $5,000–$15,000 in damage to an unprotected vehicle.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) is one of the most important coverages on your policy. Roughly 1 in 5 Texas drivers carries no insurance at all. If an uninsured driver hits you, UM coverage pays your medical bills and vehicle damage. Without it, you’re on your own.

Medical Payments / Personal Injury Protection (PIP) covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of who was at fault. PIP also covers lost wages and essential services. Texas insurers are required to offer PIP, though you can decline it in writing.

Rental Reimbursement pays for a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim. Without it, you’re paying out of pocket for transportation while waiting on repairs — which can take weeks after hail season.

Gap Coverage pays the difference between what you owe on your vehicle loan and what the car is worth if it’s totaled. New cars depreciate fast — you could owe $5,000 more than your car’s value within the first year.

Texas Auto Insurance Requirements

Texas law requires minimum liability coverage of 30/60/25. You must carry proof of insurance at all times and present it during traffic stops, accidents, and vehicle registration. Driving without insurance in Texas results in fines of $175–$350 for a first offense, plus a surcharge of $250 per year for three years. Your license and registration can also be suspended.

But meeting the minimum isn’t the same as being properly protected. A rear-end collision at a stoplight can produce medical claims well beyond $30,000. We help you understand the real-world risks and choose limits that actually protect your family.

Saving on Auto Insurance in Collin County

We find discounts that many drivers miss:

  • Bundle home and auto — combining your homeowners or renters policy with auto typically saves 10–20%
  • Multi-vehicle discounts — insuring two or more cars on the same policy reduces per-vehicle costs
  • Good driver and claims-free discounts — a clean record for 3–5 years earns significant savings
  • Good student discounts — students under 25 with a 3.0+ GPA qualify with most carriers
  • Defensive driving courses — completing an approved course reduces your premium
  • Anti-theft and safety features — alarms, tracking systems, and advanced safety equipment

North Texas Driving Risks

Collin County drivers face specific hazards that affect both claims and premiums:

  • Hail storms — DFW averages multiple severe hail events per year, making comprehensive coverage essential
  • Highway 75 and the Dallas North Tollway — high-speed corridors with heavy traffic and frequent accidents
  • Uninsured drivers — Texas ranks among the worst states for uninsured motorists
  • Urban sprawl and long commutes — more miles driven means more exposure to accidents

Why Choose Collin County Insurance Group

We’re not a single-carrier agency. Tony Nichols shops your auto insurance across multiple carriers — comparing rates, discounts, and coverage options to find the best combination for your situation. Whether you’re a single driver with a clean record or a family with teen drivers, we find the right fit.

And if you also ride a motorcycle or own an RV, we can bundle those policies too — often with the same carrier for additional multi-policy savings.
